Spontaneous Combustion

May 17, 2011 by Marj Hatzell

I am not a spontaneous person. I’m a planner. I’m a list maker. I make lists about the lists I have to make. Surprises scare the shiz out of me, yo. Predictability, routine and sameness make me most comfortable. I wash myself in the same order. I do my breakfast/meds/tea routine in the same order every day. Same goes for most things in my life. SAME.

And I wonder where my kids get their lack of ability to deal with transitions. Hmmm…

But lately, life throws curve balls and I have to be spontaneous. Like, Friday night when I didn’t have to watch my nephew (because his parents were getting married in St. Lucia) so the husband and I went on a date. On a FRIDAY. Which we never do because? SATURDAY IS FOR DATES. Friday is unheard of!

So we got in the car, drove off and started thinking. Should we go to our county’s center and walk and shop? Neat little restaurants, pleasant evening, why not?  We’ll go to the usual local microbrew, get the usual stuff we like. Sameness. Then we had a novel idea!  Let’s go to the NEXT COUNTY OVER and go to THEIR center, you know, like the county seat?  And go to THAT town and walk around there and shop and eat and stuff.

The shirt I spontaneously wore for our spontaneous date.

So we did.

Then we parked the car, scrounged for quarters ,walked around, checked menus and…ended up in the OTHER location of that local microbrew. As in, same restaurant, same owners, one of three locations.

Not so spontaneous.

But we went to a different TOWN. And I ordered something the husband did NOT expect. I always get their chicken pot pie because OMGAH it’s good and I didn’t!  I ordered pan roasted chicken instead.  I KNOW!  This spontaneous/doing different stuff is contagious!  I even ordered a margarita on the rocks with no salt instead of …a margarita on the rocks with no salt. But hey!  I sat with my legs crossed the OTHER way from usual. Ahem.

Then yesterday we had a spontaneous gathering of parents and siblings and a cousin and aunt and I whipped up a non-planned dinner and my new Sister-in-law’s mother came over with wedding pics and video and we watched it and that was NOT planned and my evening was completely different.

I KNOW. It’s hard to contain yourself, right?

And then!  This morning!  Another brother was back in town from the same wedding and I spontaneously said I’d go to breakfast with him and surprise my dad! Unplanned!  Until we drove away and my phone reminded me I had a massage scheduled. Ooopsy.  So I went to the massage and THEN met my Dad and Bro. Unexpectedly, except they were expecting me and stuff. And then the bro and I ran errands (without a list!)and I came back here to do stuff I wasn’t expecting to do and…the school nurse called. Because Bug Boy isn’t feeling well.

See what I get for trying to be spontaneous? MY KID GETS SICK!

Never again. For now on I stick to my lists.

    You’re so cute!

Spontaneous? What’s that? I forget stuff if I don’t have a list and/or routine. That’s how stuff gets messed up around here and meltdowns happen.

This post made me think of Sheldon. 😉

And, by the way, my son once told his younger brother to get off the part of the couch that was “his,” and I realized…IT WAS THE SAME CORNER AS SHELDON’S!

That is the greatest date shirt EVER.

Yeah, I’m so not spontaneous either! I love my lists. I have one sitting under my elbow right now. Don’t know what I’d do without it. Congrats on trying to walk on the wild side. Maybe someday I will. I am more go with the flow since we’ve had twins, but that doesn’t mean that I’ll come up with my own spontenaity. I’m just learning to react better to others creativeness.
