What Autism Is and Isn’t
16April 2, 2011 by Marj Hatzell
On World Autism Day, I’d like to remind you about what autism IS and what autism IS NOT.
Autism IS NOT:
- A death sentence
- a fate worth than death
- fun
- fake
- spoiled children
- bad parenting
- a disease
- making children “suffer”
- defining my child
- A one-size fits all disorder
- unfeeling, unemotional children
- Only present in children and boys
- Outgrown
- a choice
- All savants
- mental retardation
- An excuse to allow children to misbehave or be bratty
Autism IS:
- A brain-based, neurodevelopmental disorder
- never boring
- Exquisite, intelligent, complex children
- challenging
- different in every child
- Developmental delay that could include components of OCD, ADHD, social delays and communication delays
- often behavioral
- controversial and political
- a spectrum
- a gift
- life-altering
Got that? Good.
AMEN, sister!
Why, thank you!
/applause XD
