Hau’oli Makahiki Hou!

December 31, 2009 by Marj Hatzell

If I were on, say, Hawaii, that would be my island greeting to you. Just sayin’.

I don’t make resolutions.  I do, however, set goals for myself.  Because I’m feeling awfully nostalgic these days, I looked back to see what I thought I’d improve on for 2009:

This year we look forward to doing something about the giant mudpit in our backyard (that once held a rickety-Beverly-Hillbillies-Deck) and possible more therapy for Bugaboo. We need to search for a school placement for him (which is not as easy as it sounds, we want to find the right fit for him) and we need to maintain the status quo around here. We also need to remember to be a family sometimes. It sounds ridiculous, but the truth is that we often fall into this pattern of four separate individuals who share a dwelling. We need to do family activities and figure out how to enjoy being with each other more.

I also want to be a more patient parent. And exercise more. These two go hand in hand, see. If I get daily exercise, I release stress. If I am not so stressed out, I can parent more rationally. If I can parent more rationally, my kids are happier because I’m not chasing them with long, pointy objects (I keed, I keed. They aren’t pointy.).

Other than that, my only goal (I don’t make resolutions) is to spend more time with my husband. More quality time. More nudge-nudge-wink-wink time. And to get Bugaboo to stop sleeping in our room so we can reclaim it. The double bed in Bugaboo’s room is much to small and it is getting old. Plus, it’s hard to feel like a PHAT wifey when surrounded by aqua blue paint and fishies on the wall. And musical buses.

Let’s see.  Mudpit?  Nope. Still no deck. Unless you count our temporary mud solution.  Aka, plywood thrown over the mud.  Which works great but OMFG if looks bad.

Therapy for Bugaboo?  School placement?  Well, he’s at an awesome new school.  So, CHECK!

Family time?  We’re getting much better at it, so CHECK!

More dates and time with husband?  We’re currently averaging once or twice a month for dates, so CHECK!

More nudge-nudge-wink-wink?   Hmmmm…I’d say it’s better, but not that much.  But I appreciate it more.

Bugaboo sleeping in his room?  Most of the time, so CHECK!

More patient parent?  Again, better. Not where I want to be but still a vast improvement. CHECK!

Daily exercise?  I’m currently at three times of more a week. Better than NOTHING.  Less stress, for sure.  So CHECK!

Now, for this year? 2010?  I have lofty goals:

  • get rid of that twenty-five pounds I gained in 2009
  • reorganize the closets in this house so they function better
  • MORE EXERCISE!  Join a gym!
  • Run that 5K!
  • Read books. No, read A book. ANY BOOK!  JUST READ!  I enjoy it so much, just get very little time to do it.
  • Figure out the next step for me, since I’m about to go bonkers if I stay home one more year.

How about y’all?  Resolutions?  Goals?  Things you wanna get done?  Spill the beans.

Now, about that deck…

  1. There’s always the NOVA marathon challenge.

  2. BOSSY says:

You have many more “checks” than Bossy. Jealous. Bossy seems to be sliding backward down the “check” scale as the years go by…
