NEWSFLASH!

This just in!

It turns out that children watch what their parents do. In fact, children learn quite well by watching their parents as examples. After all, parents and caretakers are their first teachers.  They also listen to things parents say.

INORITE?

When your kid does something or says something embarrassing? And you stare at them wide-eyed all “OMG WHERE DID YOU LEARN THAT?”  Sometimes it comes from you.

Now, there are exceptions to this rule (after all, I have never climbed the garage roof or hopped the fence nekkid to go to the park. Not lately, anyway). Surely outside experiences and other people they come into contact with can influence them.

But I’m the first to admit that my kids never stop moving because their parent don’t stop moving often, either. I mean, we’re slowing down a little bit now that we’re forty (we only do 10 hours of home projects on the weekends these days) but it’s still a family of energizer bunnies around these parts. Actually, I know Bug Boy is highly reactive and an external processor because I am (read: chatty spaz). And Bugaboo’s personality is basically a carbon copy of his father’s. So there’s that.

So next time you want to know why your kids talk back to you or yell so much or are total slobs? Unmotivated and rude? Spend all their time with a screen in front of their face and eating junk food?

Pot. Kettle.

Just sayin’.

  1. The parents I saw during Trick or treating pulling around a cooler full of beer and talking about what flavor vodka they liked best with their seven up are prolly going to be the first ones who are shocked when they catch their kids drinking at a young age.

I don’t think that there is anything wrong if people drink occasionally but, really, can’t we just have Halloween Trick or Treating be just for the kids?
